Timescales & Availability

Unfortunately, my next available booking date is September.

I always book work in advance, so am rarely available to start a new project immediately. I may also have a waiting list.

With a novel, my editing services are ideally suited to those who do not have a specific timescale. With short stories, I can generally fit these in if I am given a week's notice.

Professional editing is time-consuming and labour-intensive, requiring concentration and attention to detail. It is not possible to give a definite timescale for structural editing or copy-editing, as this will depend on the word count of the document, the level of editing required, and the number of hours that both the client and I can contribute to the project in any one week. Due to ongoing family illness, I have now had to alter my work pattern, and my weekly hours have changed. The following timescales give an idea of how long it will take to edit a novel of about 50,000 words.

Option 1: 'Check & Change'
For structural editing and copy-editing, typing up changes and raising queries with the client: 6–8 weeks.

For proofreading alone: 3 weeks.

Option 2: 'Self-Publish from Scratch'
For copy-editing (including structural editing), formatting, proofreading, and assisting with the self-publishing process: please allow around 1416 weeks for producing a printed book and an e-book.
