Sue Shade

Freelance Editor & Proofreader (Fiction)

to Include Self-Publishing Services

Welcome & Overview
I am a freelance editor and proofreader based in East Hampshire, UK. I started out as a trainee proofreader, in 2007, for The Better Book Company, West Sussex, and have been running my own editing business since 2012. I offer a professional service and am an Intermediate Member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP).

I offer a full editing and proofreading service for fictional work (novels and short stories) as well as a complete self-publishing package. Please see the SERVICES page for more details. I welcome both new and established writers, and existing authors. References are available on request; alternatively, please see my testimonials page.

I always carry out a free sample edit before work commences, and my fee is based on the word count of your original document. I do not charge an hourly rate.

Why Pay For Editing?
Professional editing is not just a check of spelling, punctuation, and grammar. It is about preparing the writer's raw text for publication; ensuring it is clear, concise, and consistent to the reader. Writers may believe that self-checking their work is adequate, but they are too familiar with it, and often unaware of developmental issues that can occur.

Self-publishing without professional editing is likely to have a negative impact on an author's reputation. Readers can be unforgiving, especially if they have paid for a book. Even traditional publishers expect typescripts to be submitted to a certain standard. It is vital that work intended for publication is professionally edited.
