Sue Shade

Freelance Editor & Proofreader (Fiction)

to Include Self-Publishing Services

about me
I am a freelance editor and proofreader based in East Hampshire, UK. I started out as a trainee proofreader, in 2007, for The Better Book Company, West Sussex. I am currently an Intermediate Member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders.

I offer a professional service, and references are available on request. Alternatively, please see my testimonials page. I welcome both new and established writers.

A note about fees: My fee is based on the word count of your original document – not an hourly rate – and is quoted in advance.

Services offered

I offer a full editing and proofreading service for fictional work, to include novels, anthologies, and individual short stories. Please see the Services page for details.

I always carry out a free sample before work commences.
Why pay for editing?
Editing is so much more than checking spelling, punctuation and grammar. It is about preparing a writer's raw text for publication, ensuring that it is clear, concise and consistent.

Many writers believe that self-checking their work is adequate, but they are too familiar with it, and often unaware of the structural issues that occur during the writing process.

If you are self-publishing, mistakes in your work will have a negative effect on your reputation as an author. Your customers may be unforgiving, especially if they have paid to read your work. Even conventional publishers expect typescripts to be submitted to a certain standard. Therefore, it is vital to have your work professionally edited.
